Sind College of Karachi, under the supervision of Dr. Mohinder-Miles Morton, it is currently located at 'A' Road, Churchgate.[1]

The college started as an Arts and Science college initially. Many new courses and subjects were offered later—the faculty of Commerce was introduced in 1980, BMS and Computer Science were introduced in 1999, BMM and Biotechnology in 2002, and Banking & Insurance in 2003.

History

The college was formally inaugurated in September 1948 at the Elphinstone College Library Hall. In early 1949, Principal T.M. Advani arranged for a bungalow named "Goolshan" at Peddar Road to serve as a nucleus for a science college. At this stage, Mr. Bhagwansingh B. Advani, the sole trustee of the Basantsing Anil Dharmada Trust, stepped in with a donation of Rs. 1,25,000, a significant contribution at the time. In observance of his wishes, the college was named Jai Hind College and Basantsing Institute of Science.

Location

Jai Hind College is located in South Mumbai, close to the Churchgate railway station. Suburban residents find the proximity to the arterial railway network convenient.

Initially a small bungalow near Goolshan served as a hostel for the refugee students[3] from Pakistan.

It proved to be inconvenient that the Arts and Science faculties of the college were five miles apart. The Home and Revenue Minister of Bombay sanctioned a plot for the Jai Hind College building at "A" Road, Backbay Reclamation, a prime location. The foundations of this building were laid in September, 1950. The college has remained at this location since then.[1]

Curriculum

Jai Hind offers a number of undergraduate degrees:[4]

The curricula for the above courses is decided by the University of Mumbai under the jurisdiction of which, Jai Hind College falls.

The college also offers a Junior College Program (equivalent to A-levels) administered by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.
